University Arms, Cambridge
When people think of a night away close by, many hotels in the “Shires” spring to mind but let me tell you about a very special property in the centre of Cambridge and why you should add it to your “escape for a night or two” list.
The University Arms won an award for best new property when I won my travel designer award at the TTG Luxury Awards. I wanted to see what was so special about the place.
We drove up one afternoon and checked into the stunning hotel lobby. They took our car away to park it for us and we happily settled into a gorgeous suite overlooking the park. They had kindly offered us dinner too at their restaurant Parker’s Tavern run by Tristan Welch.
Before that we had a walking tour of the city with the most wonderful guide. He took us to the college and nearby bar where they had discovered DNA. You can still sit in the same seat where they had their eureka moment. There is also a lot of haunted stories set amongst the weaving cobbled passages. Our guide was so much fun, we didn’t want the tour to end but had to say goodbye for a quick soak in the tub and off for dinner.
Tristan Welch is a clever chef. The food was brasserie style but elevated to a really top class level. We had a fabulous and fun evening topped off with a G and T in the bar after and a good nights sleep.
The shopping in Cambridge is varied and all easily accessible on foot. We enjoyed a cheeky lunch at Sticks and Sushi before the quick drive home from what was a lovely weekend made so special by the fabulous property.
They are generous with their gifts of delicious chocolate and a classic book beautiful presented for each check in. It is a thoughtful place in a city where thinking is definitely the most popular pastime.
