Les Grandes Alpes, Courchevel
I’ve always had an image of Courchevel that it is the playground of the rich and famous. I would love to tell you I was wrong and that it is great value and accessible for the majority but I’d be lying. As we sat down for lunch up on the mountain my ski weary legs were drawn to the burger. It cost €70. As they said in pulp fiction, that had better be a pretty special “expletive” burger!
The question is, why are such discerning clients drawn to Courchevel and the answer is simple. The skiing is truly lovely, with wide open slopes combined with challenging runs and off piste adventures that could keep even an expert busy on new runs for weeks.
The mountain restaurants have such impeccable service and food, you’d be forgiven for thinking they were also the main draw. As we settled into lunch with a magnum of Rose and a DJ in the background it was certainly a highlight for me.
There is so much top quality accommodation it can be hard to know where to start but let me tell you about a very special and unique offering. We were incredibly lucky to stay at Les Grandes Alpes. It is not only ski in ski out but the front door of the property opens onto the high street so very much the best of both worlds.
They are apartments of the very highest standard with roaring fires, large sofas and a team of butlers to look after your every need. Breakfast and any other meal can be served in your apartment and literally anything you could imagine you’d want. I have alway questioned how good the service can be in these kind of places and whether it feels intrusive. I was completely blown away. It as very much a home away from home. If only my home had a “Chris” preparing my breakfast each day!
There is a lovely bar downstairs with some dining tables, a spa and superb ski room. The team are all true professionals but what I loved was they were also friendly and fun. They had time to connect with the guests. Their speciality is a white peach Bellini. What could be more luxurious than flying in fresh peaches to make a Bellinis at the wrong time of year up in the mountains. Yep, just like I do at home!
This is luxury for people who don’t need to scream about it, in fact the opposite. It’s for people here for skiing, good food, good service but still want to have breakfast in their thermals and socks.
I miss my home away from home, my Champagne on tap, my exhilaration after the skiing, my bath and superb bed. I miss the team at Les Grandes Alpes and the magic of Courchevel. The simple rule for this place is if you can afford it, GO. You will not be disappointed.
