Gerona, Spain
When you think of Spanish city breaks Barcelona and Seville are probably the first to spring to mind. Gerona has never been on my radar and as we stroll its stunning cobbled streets and gaze up at its beautiful architecture I wondered why.
This whole area of Spain feels undiscovered and a little more authentic than the well-known Ramblas of Barcelona with the gatherings of hen and stag dos. Here, local friends gather to sit and relax in the bars and cafes and food is one of the main attractions.
You may come for the huge number of Michelin Starred restaurants like the one we ate in called Casamar but even a quick 10 Euro meal in a locally run restaurant is a treat. There is a reason there are so many Michelin Starred restaurants here, they take their food very seriously.
We stayed at the relatively new Camiral Hotel. It is about 15 minutes outside the city and based on the PGA Cataluña golf course. The joy of this place is it has a very relaxed resort feel with lovely large pool, gym, spa, fantastic bar and food. For the die hard city break fans they may want to be based right in the city but anyone looking for a more relaxed pace and the ability to unwind by a pool and then choose to go in for the afternoon and evening this is perfect.
They also have amazing villas coming on-line, which you will be able to rent so for any families this becomes a brilliant option. You have your own villa and pool but all the facilities of the resort and Gerona on your doorstep. They arrange babysitting for the Michelin Starred night out.
The coastline is stunning and really worth a day to explore and longer if you enjoy the beach. The walking path takes you from village to village, past Cypress trees and turquoise sea.
Dali also has a real influence on the region and we visited his house. It was actually a gift for his muse and wife Gala that oddly she never let him stay in overnight. The rich tapestry of their lives unfolds as you explore the stunning house. It is a brilliant insight into their lives and well worth a visit.
This place was a revelation to me and somewhere I am already suggesting to clients. The culture, food and scenery are just spectacular.
